Track Days and Autocross Tips

If you are going to be heading out to a race track or to an autocross event, there are some simple rules that you should follow so that you have the best experience you can. These rules are not just exclusive to novices though, as all of the other competitors there will probably be doing the same thing.

  1. It is best to show up early. Not only is this good for the registration process, it will allow you to walk the track and become familiar with it. Also, showing up early gives you time to prepare your car. This means checking the tire pressures and fluids to make sure it is all in tip top shape.
  2. Be sure that you have all of your stuff with you. Since you will be at the track all day, it is a good idea to bring along a cooler with some food, drinks and possibly sunscreen. You should also have a folding chair, as you probably don’t want to sit in your car all day long.
  3. Walk the track. Getting to know the track that you will be racing on ahead of time is essential. The best way to do this is to walk the track to see just where the racing line is and if there are any changes in the pavement that could affect grip. For an autocross event, if the track is small enough, walk it several times and to become as familiar as possible. If the event takes place at an actual racing course, it may be helpful to watch in car videos or to try and find a video game that replicates the track, as walking it may not be an option. Also, if you are a novice, you can get an instructor to ride along with you to show you the correct line to take to make your outing more fun.
  4. Don’t forget your helmet. All racing events will require you to wear a helmet that is SNELL approved. There are many choices out there and you can even resort to picking up a motorcycle helmet if you need to. If all else fails, the track or autocross event will most likely have helmets that you can use for free if you can’t supply your own.
  5. Bring a camera. You never know what else will show up to the event and if you also bring a friend along, they can get a shot of you and your car in action. A camera is going to be a great way to remember the fun that you had.
  6. HAVE FUN. Track days and autocrosses are all about having fun with your car. Sure, you could go out and compete for the ultimate lap time, but it is essential to simply have a good time while you are doing it.

If you use these tips on your next outing, you should be able to have a great time and put in some great lap times. Track days are about having a good time with your car and finding out just what it can do. If you are a novice, it is essential that you take it easy the first couple of laps to find out what you are comfortable with before you try and go all out.
